In both indices, it is the working-age population that report the inability to afford or access high value care. The indices also suggest that fewer Americans perceive good value for the quality of care received when balanced with costs. Creating solutions for Americans, in particular the working-aged population, that address cost, access, and quality is an important lever to improve health.

The Commonwealth Fund’s Unforeseen Health Care Bills and Coverage Denials by Health Insurers in the U.S. reports that many insured, working-age Americans face unexpected medical bills and coverage denials for care. The survey suggests that health insurance tactics, including initial denial determinations, may be flawed and prevent access to needed care. Patients also may not be aware of any rights to appeal billing and care denials. Creating more transparent relationships between systems of care and actual payers (employers) may offer a new path to improved costs and quality.

In a press release, Aon projects US employer healthcare costs to increase 9% in 2025. Employers continue to feel the brunt of rising costs and are working to develop impactful solutions. The increase in prescription drug costs, rise in chronic conditions, and new high-cost therapies were cited as cost-drivers.
