Survey | Employer Health Benefits 2024 Annual Survey

Kaiser Family Foundation released results from the 2024 annual employer health benefits survey. A relatively stable 63% of workers are covered by self-funded plans. Since 2023, both the average single and family premiums increased by 6% (now $8,951) and 7% (now $25,572), respectively. Since 2019, the average premium for family coverage has increased by 24%. As employers seek to improve the quality of care while also managing costs, firms with 1,000 or more employees are more likely to include a high-performance or tiered network. Often mid- to large-sized employers themselves, health systems and medical groups have an opportunity to demonstrate success in managing their own populations as well as those of local and regional employers.

Survey | Pulse of the Purchaser 2024

The National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions issued insights from a survey of public and private employers and purchasers. Important highlights include: (1) rising healthcare costs affecting employee attraction and retention as well as increased cost-shifting to employees, (2) managing drug prices, high-cost claims, and hospital prices as top threats to affordability, (3) improving engagement to address health equity, (4) addressing women’s health, mental health, and obesity, and (5) reconsidering PBM strategies to improve transparency and control.

Of surveyed employers:

• 26% are considering direct contracting with providers

• 17% already contract directly with hospitals

• 22% have advanced primary care strategies; 54% may adopt advanced primary care strategies

• 18% tier hospital networks; 46% may develop a tiered hospital strategy
